About Our Council History

  • Our Council was established on May 20, 1969 by Frank Weigl who moved to Auburn in 1964 and was the past Grand Knight of Pasadena Council No. 1174, a former District Deputy and a Past Faithful Navigator of Cabrillo General Assembly. Our Council replaced the old Auburn Council No. 2276 which was instituted on May 15, 1921 and dissolved April 7, 1934. Our first two meetings were held on the second floor of the Placer Savings and Loan Office. We started with 52 charter members. For the Columbian year beginning July l, l969, Joe Bueb was elected as our first official Grand Knight and our meetings were held at the Grange Hall on Bell Road, (rent was $20 per month) Father Marshall was our Chaplain from l969 to l972, and attended almost every meeting. He was followed by Father Brennan who became Pastor of St. Joseph's and a brother Knight. The chaplains play a very important part in the spiritual growth of our Council. Frank Weigl was the Grand Knight in 1974-75. The charter members took their first degree in Auburn, put on by the Roseville Council, and took the 2nd and 3rd degree at the Newman Center in Sacramento. One of our first major projects was to help fix up and do repair work on St. Joseph School.

Some of our First Activities

Some of our first activities included:

  • Setting up a telephone committee.
A Council camping trip at Woodchuck Flat.
A float in the 4th of July Parade.
    The St. Patrick's dinner dance.

  •  We tried unsuccessfully to get the beer booth at the Auburn District Fair but got the "Corn on the Cob" concession instead. This turned out to be one of our best events for many years to come, even though we never made much of a profit, and the Council Brothers were always available to help.

  • We held our charter dinner, and received our Council Charter on Sept. 7, l969. The cost was $3.50 per couple and after spending $l0l.00 for food, $57.00 on bar supplies, and $l9.00 on table decorations. We made a net profit $9l.60. Our Council was chartered in honor of John F. Kennedy. During the early 1970 the Council donated a lot of time and effort to repair work on St. Joseph School. We cleaned and painted the classrooms, re-built the kitchen, bought a new stove and refrigerator and did some gardening and replanting. We also had a float in most of the parades in Auburn. Our floats were acknowledged by all, as some of the best, letting the community know who are the Knights of Columbus. The Council entered a float in the Auburn District Fair entitled "The Santa Maria" and won the grand prize trophy. We put in l26 hours of work on this and spent $3l.76 for supplies. A picture of the float appeared in the Auburn Journal.

  •  Listed are a few of the donations made during the first years of the council.

  • Donated 15 aprons to the Placer High School kitchen.
Bought first aid kit for Chana High School.
Our Council is a supporter of: The St. Joseph Patrons Club on most of their requests for funds.
St. Joseph Mardi Gras, the main fund raiser of the school.
    Mt. St. Joseph Seminary.
The life of the unborn and anti abortion programs.
The youth in this area, including St. Joseph School and several scouting programs.
The community Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Basket programs.
Our Council started the Bingo program in l978, which allows the Council to help many worthy causes and help reduce the church debt. Bingo is still in operation to this day and doing well.
